EndNote can produce many accurate citations for BCU Harvard style, however there are some limitations to be aware of:

  • Authors display in a single format (Surname, Initial(s)). For institutional authors you will need to correct your reference to display the full name. (Example: change "University, B.C." to "Birmingham City University")
  • Some of our guidelines ask you to input citation details about the item you are referencing which don't map to any field in EndNote. You will need to manually edit your references to ensure they meet the guidelines. (Example: the unique specifications of different art formats.)
  • Not all resource types are available in EndNote. You may need to find the closest match and manually edit your bibliography to meet the BCU Harvard guidelines.
  • EndNote's closest match is sometimes called something slightly different. We have mapped these resource types to work with our more common resources:
    • "Film and Television" in EndNote will generate a reference that meets our film guidelines. For Television/Episodes, please manually create your reference to meet the guidelines.
    • "AudioVisual" in EndNote will generate a reference that meets our sound recordings (single composer) guidelines. For other audio (except Podcasts) you will need to manually edit/create your reference.
  • BCU Harvard has a single set of guidelines for "Dictionaries and Encyclopaedias". In EndNote, there are two different citation types. We have mapped the following:
    • "Dictionary" should be used when you have an editor for the author.
    • "Encyclopaedia" should be used when the item has an author and no editor.
  • If you miss a field when adding a citation into EndNote, then it won't be included in the citation.
  • Fields requiring a specific output format (e.g. "17 March 2026" for the accessed date) should be input in that format into EndNote.

With all references generated by EndNote, it is your responsibility to check the reference and edit your bibliography as needed.
