You can request a renewal in one of two ways:

Please contact us a day or two before the due date if you'd like to renew your item. Renewals are not guaranteed, as the owning library decides whether a renewal is possible. If the item is already overdue, renewal is unlikely—please return it so we can send it back promptly.

Once we receive your request, our Inter-Library Loans team will check with the lending library. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • British Library loans cannot be renewed, but they come with a longer initial loan period.
  • If a renewal is approved:
    • The first renewal is free
    • Subsequent renewals cost £2 each, added to your library account
    • You can pay online using a credit/debit card via Library Search (sign in with your university email and password)

If a full renewal isn’t possible but the item is still in date, we may be able to offer a free extension of up to 3 working days—just enough time to finish using the item before it needs to be returned.
