The British Standards Institute (BSI), the provider of British Standards Online (BSOL), are implementing Digital Rights Management to protect and secure their digital content.

There is no change to how you view the documents; however, if you want to download and print the document you will be required to download the FileOpen plug-in and have Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader installed.

On devices owned by Birmingham City University (BCU) please contact the IT Helpdesk to get the FileOPen plug-in installed (IT Helpdesk). You can download Adobe Acrobat or Reader from the software centre if it is not already on your device.

For personal devices, you will need to install the FileOpen plug-in. Chromebook users should install the FileOpen Viewer available from the Google Play Store. (FileOpen Installation - FileOpen)

To download a document click on the download button.

Once a document has been downloaded:

  • You can retain a copy of the document on up to three of your own devices
  • You can read the document offline
  • You can print a single copy of the document (It is recommended that you print an entire document as printing a single page fulfils your printing allowance)

Please do not share downloaded documents with others.

Users of the web browsers Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge may need to change their browser settings in order to open a downloaded document. Please see the BSI's Digital Rights Management Guide or visit the BSI's online help pages for further advice and information.
